Pediatric dosing guide for acetaminophen and ibuprofen

Use medicine only when needed for fever, pain, or discomfort.

How to Give These Medicines

Acetaminophen

  • Give every 4–6 hours as needed
  • Wait at least 4 hours between doses
  • Do not give more than 5 doses in 24 hours

Ibuprofen

  • Give every 6–8 hours as needed
  • Wait at least 6 hours between doses
  • Do not give more than 4 doses in 24 hours
  • Do not give to babies under 6 months unless your clinician tells you to

Safety Tips

✓ Do

  • Use the measuring device that comes with the medicine
  • Shake liquid medicine well before each use
  • Write down the time you give each dose
  • Give with food if stomach upset occurs
  • Keep your child well hydrated

✗ Don't

  • Don't give more than the recommended dose
  • Don't use kitchen spoons to measure
  • Don't give both medicines at the same time unless your clinician tells you to
  • Don't give with other products containing acetaminophen or ibuprofen (make sure to check ingredients of cough & cold medicine)

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Child is under 3 months with any fever
  • Fever lasts more than 3 days
  • Child is not drinking fluids or seems dehydrated
  • Child has severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • Pain or fever gets worse or doesn't improve
  • Any new or concerning symptoms appear
