How to Give These Medicines
Acetaminophen
- Give every 4–6 hours as needed
- Wait at least 4 hours between doses
- Do not give more than 5 doses in 24 hours
Ibuprofen
- Give every 6–8 hours as needed
- Wait at least 6 hours between doses
- Do not give more than 4 doses in 24 hours
- Do not give to babies under 6 months unless your clinician tells you to
Safety Tips
✓ Do
- Use the measuring device that comes with the medicine
- Shake liquid medicine well before each use
- Write down the time you give each dose
- Give with food if stomach upset occurs
- Keep your child well hydrated
✗ Don't
- Don't give more than the recommended dose
- Don't use kitchen spoons to measure
- Don't give both medicines at the same time unless your clinician tells you to
- Don't give with other products containing acetaminophen or ibuprofen (make sure to check ingredients of cough & cold medicine)
When to Call Your Doctor
- Child is under 3 months with any fever
- Fever lasts more than 3 days
- Child is not drinking fluids or seems dehydrated
- Child has severe vomiting or diarrhea
- Pain or fever gets worse or doesn't improve
- Any new or concerning symptoms appear
